An Ellsworth resident was sentenced in federal court for his role in a methamphetamine trafficking and money laundering operation that took place in Downeast Maine. Jeremy Kane, 38, received an 87-month prison sentence followed by three years of supervised release from U.S. District Judge John A. Woodcock, Jr. Kane had entered a guilty plea on February 12, 2025.

Court documents indicate that between May 2022 and May 2023, Kane participated with others in distributing methamphetamine across Maine. The group worked with a source based in California who shipped methamphetamine to Maine for local distribution. Money earned from these sales was sent back to the California source using services such as Walmart2Walmart, Cash App, and Venmo.

Authorities stated that a co-conspirator recruited Kane and others to use their personal identifications and financial accounts to receive the drug proceeds. This process was intended to hide both the involvement of the source and the nature of the transactions as part of a broader money laundering effort.

The investigation involved several agencies including the FBI, U.S. Postal Service, Ellsworth Police Department, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, Holden Police Department, and Hancock County Sheriff’s Office.
