CBP launches automated passenger processing at Nashville International Airport

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has introduced Enhanced Passenger Processing (EPP) at Nashville International Airport, aiming to streamline the entry process for U.S. citizens returning from abroad.

The EPP system uses automated technology to photograph travelers and complete a customs assessment—including biometric confirmation, eligibility, and enforcement—before they meet with a CBP officer. This automation is intended to simplify the inspection process, allowing officers to focus on travelers directly and allocate more attention to those considered higher risk in accordance with CBP’s national security objectives.

Although the new procedure is designed to be fast and contactless, CBP officers remain available to guide passengers through the process or assist as needed. Passengers who do not wish to participate in EPP can inform an officer and proceed through the standard entry method.

EPP is part of a broader airport modernization effort by CBP that seeks to centralize traveler processing, reduce manual work for officers, and increase security through updated technology. The agency states that these changes are meant to support efficient lawful travel while also strengthening national security.

“CBP is committed to enhancing national security while streamlining lawful travel,” said CBP New Orleans Director of Field Operations Steven Stavinoha, who oversees operations at Nashville International Airport. “Americans entering the United States at Nashville International Airport will have a more efficient and pleasant experience with these enhancements. By leveraging advanced technologies and mobile applications, we are transforming inspections at airports into a seamless, touchless process, enabling faster risk identification and efficient processing of legitimate visitors.”

In fiscal year 2024, CBP processed over 420 million travelers at ports of entry—a 6.6% increase from the previous year—as international travel continues to rise.

To further assist travelers, CBP offers several free mobile applications available on both Google Play Store and Apple App Store or through their Mobile Apps Directory on their website. These apps help streamline entry procedures for those arriving in the U.S.

Regardless of which entry option is used, all visitors must comply with legal requirements such as holding proper documentation, undergoing background checks and inspection processes, and following visa terms. Violations may result in detention or removal from the country.
