U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited Knoxville, Tennessee as part of her Returning Education to the States Tour. During her visit, Secretary McMahon stopped at Grand Oaks Elementary School and took part in a roundtable with local education leaders. She also toured the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where she met with President Randy Boyd, Chancellor Donde Plowman, and Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs to learn about the Tennessee Reading Research Center and literacy programs.
“Tennessee is setting a powerful example in education by making bold investments in early literacy,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “Partnerships with institutions like the University of Tennessee are helping to deepen the impact – strengthening teacher preparation, advancing research-based initiatives, and ensuring families and educators have the tools they need to help every child succeed. It was a pleasure to continue my Returning Education to the States tour in the Volunteer State and see the good work they are doing firsthand.”
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee commented on Secretary McMahon’s visit: "Like Tennessee, Secretary McMahon understands that every child has unique needs, and I'm grateful for her commitment to return education to the states and strengthen literacy outcomes," he said. "Tennessee's successful K-3rd grade literacy strategy has helped our students lead the nation in reading proficiency gains, and I look forward to continuing these strong results in partnership with the Trump Administration."
