Leah B. Foley United States Attorney for the District of Massachusetts | Department of Justice

A Mexican national living in New Bedford was sentenced in federal court in Boston for illegally reentering the United States after being deported.

Bernardo Lorenzo-Guatemala, 38, received a four-month prison sentence followed by two years of supervised release from U.S. District Court Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton. Upon completion of his sentence, he will be subject to deportation. In June 2025, Lorenzo-Guatemala pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful reentry of a deported alien after being arrested and charged by criminal complaint in May 2025.

Lorenzo-Guatemala had previously been deported from the United States on June 4, 2019. After his removal, he returned unlawfully to the country. Immigration officials discovered his presence following his arrest on July 2, 2024, for operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

"United States Attorney Leah B. Foley and Patricia H. Hyde, Acting Field Office Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations in Boston made the announcement. Valuable assistance was provided by the Lynn Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brian Sullivan of the Criminal Division prosecuted the case."
