Guatemalan national sentenced for illegal reentry following prior removal

A Guatemalan national who reentered the United States after being deported in late 2024 has been sentenced in federal court, according to an announcement from Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom.

Rigoberto Cano Perez, 28, was removed from the country by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on November 20, 2024. His deportation followed a conviction in Rhode Island state court in December 2023 for simple assault and/or battery and disorderly conduct.

Authorities learned that Perez had returned to Rhode Island when an automated biometric fingerprint match entered into the National Crime Information Center identified him after his arrest on May 11, 2025. He was arrested for violating a domestic no contact order and charged with domestic disorderly conduct.

U.S. District Court Judge Melissa R. DuBose sentenced Perez to time served. ICE has lodged an immigration detainer against him.

The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorneys Taylor A. Dean and Peter I. Roklan. The investigation was conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, this case falls under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative designed to coordinate Department of Justice resources against illegal immigration, cartels, transnational criminal organizations, and violent crime by utilizing programs such as the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

"Operation Take Back America streamlines efforts and resources from the Department’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN)."
