U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge arrested a man wanted in Hidalgo County for an alleged sexual crime against a child.
“CBP officers continue to maintain their vigilance and that dedication to duty resulted in this significant apprehension for a man wanted on an outstanding warrant for a crime of a sexual nature involving a child,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo Port of Entry. “Apprehensions like these reinforce the border security aspect of our mission and help keep our communities safer.”
The arrest took place on Saturday, September 6, when CBP officers referred Jaime Maldonado, a 20-year-old U.S. citizen pedestrian, for secondary inspection. After being escorted to secondary inspection, biometric verification through law enforcement databases confirmed that Maldonado had an outstanding felony warrant for sexual assault of a child issued by the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office. He was then turned over to sheriff’s deputies for transport to jail and further legal proceedings.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is used by law enforcement agencies as an automated database to share information about outstanding warrants and other offenses. According to CBP, previous arrests based on NCIC information have included individuals wanted for serious crimes such as homicide, escape, money laundering, robbery, narcotics distribution, sexual child abuse, fraud, larceny, and military desertion. The agency noted that criminal charges are allegations until proven in court.
CBP describes itself as the nation’s largest law enforcement organization with more than 65,000 employees responsible for protecting U.S. borders on land, air, and sea.
