Gainesville man faces federal charges for child pornography offenses

Jason R. Coody, U.S. Attorney | U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida

Daniel Reginald Hanna, II, a 38-year-old resident of Gainesville, Florida, has been indicted on federal charges related to child pornography. The indictment includes one count each of attempted distribution, receipt, and possession of child pornography. The announcement was made by John P. Heekin, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida.

Hanna made his initial appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Midori A. Lowry on September 5 at the U.S. Courthouse in Gainesville. His trial is set for October 29 before Chief Judge Allen C. Winsor in Gainesville.

If found guilty, Hanna could face up to 20 years in prison for each charge.

The investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations under U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the Gainesville Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Adam Hapner is prosecuting the case.

"An indictment is merely an allegation by a grand jury that a defendant has committed a violation of federal criminal law and is not evidence of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent and entitled to a fair trial, during which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial," according to the statement from authorities.

This prosecution is part of Project Safe Childhood, an initiative started by the Department of Justice in May 2006 that coordinates efforts among federal, state, and local agencies to address child sexual exploitation online and identify victims.
