The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, led by Chairman James Comer (R-Ky.), has announced new developments in its ongoing review of the federal government’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell.
The committee released the transcript of former U.S. Attorney General William Barr’s deposition as part of its efforts to examine how authorities handled the case. Additionally, letters from two other former attorneys general were made public. Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez stated he has “no present memory of decisions or conversations relating to the investigation and prosecution of the Jeffrey Epstein matter.” Former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions wrote that he does “not possess knowledge and information relevant to the Committee’s investigation into Epstein-related matters.” Both letters are subject to 18 U.S.C. § 1001, and both officials had previously been subpoenaed for depositions.
Chairman Comer also sent a letter to the estate of Jeffrey Epstein requesting unredacted versions of cash ledgers, message logs, calendars, and flight logs after committee staff conducted an in camera review of these documents in their unredacted form. The request aims to ensure that all necessary documents are produced without redactions for legislative and investigative purposes.
In addition, Chairman Comer sent a letter to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson pursuant to H. Res. 668, which directs the committee to continue its investigation into potential mismanagement related to federal inquiries into Epstein and Maxwell. The letter outlines actions taken by the committee so far.
A second set of documents received from Epstein’s estate was released by the committee on September 12, 2025.
