An Iowa City resident, Alfred Washington, Jr., 46, has been sentenced to 27 months in federal prison for possessing ammunition as a felon. According to court documents, Washington was found with ammunition in May 2024. Authorities discovered a receipt for shooting accessories during a search of his residence and videos of him at a gun range on his phone. Washington is barred from owning firearms or ammunition due to prior convictions, including a 2018 conviction for possessing a firearm as a felon and domestic abuser in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa.
Following his prison term, Washington will serve three years of supervised release. Federal sentencing does not allow parole.
United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa announced the sentence. The case was investigated by the Iowa City Police Department.
The prosecution falls under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), an initiative that coordinates law enforcement efforts and community partnerships to reduce violent crime and gun violence nationwide. In May 2021, the Department of Justice introduced an updated strategy for PSN focusing on building trust within communities, supporting organizations aimed at preventing violence, setting targeted enforcement priorities, and evaluating outcomes.
