A Rapid City man has been sentenced to three and a half years in federal prison for illegally possessing ammunition. U.S. District Judge Camela C. Theeler handed down the sentence to Dylan Sanchez, 33, on September 29, 2025. In addition to his prison term, Sanchez will serve three years of supervised release and must pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
Sanchez was indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2024 and pleaded guilty on July 21, 2025. According to court records, law enforcement stopped Sanchez in Rapid City on April 10, 2024, for speeding. After failing a field sobriety test, he was arrested and his vehicle was searched. Officers found over 200 rounds of ammunition, pistol magazines including an extended magazine, cocaine, and distributable amounts of marijuana in the vehicle. Due to a previous felony conviction, Sanchez is prohibited from possessing ammunition.
United States Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell announced the sentencing and stated that the case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence through collaboration between law enforcement agencies and communities. "On May 26, 2021, the Department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results," according to the statement.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Rapid City Police Department investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Benjamin Schroeder prosecuted it.
Sanchez was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
