Last week, Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent held talks with Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil of Germany. The meeting focused on the European Union’s plans to support Ukraine and addressed ongoing international efforts regarding Russia and Iran.
According to a statement, Secretary Bessent highlighted the United States’ position on European involvement in supporting Ukraine. He stated the Administration expects Europe to "proactively increase G7 pressure on Russia."
Bessent also brought up the subject of sanctions against Iran. He noted the United States’ intention to work with Germany and other European partners on implementing further sanctions following the United Nations snapback. As he said, the U.S. is seeking cooperation with its allies: "the United States’ desire to cooperate with Germany and European allies on additional sanctions on Iran following the UN snapback."
The meeting comes as Western nations continue discussions over coordinated actions in response to international security concerns.
