The move is described as a significant milestone in Timor-Leste’s efforts toward greater regional integration and cooperation.

A statement from the U.S. government noted, "Today, the United States warmly congratulates Timor-Leste on its historic accession as the 11th member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). This milestone marks an important step in Timor-Leste’s ongoing pursuit of regional integration and cooperation. Since becoming an observer, Timor-Leste has taken meaningful steps to engage with ASEAN institutions and has demonstrated dedication to the organization’s vision for peace, stability, and prosperity in Southeast Asia."
