First and Last Bakery, LLC, based in Hartford, Connecticut, has issued a recall for several tomato sauce products due to a potential health risk identified by the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection. The affected products include First and Last Original Marinara Sauce, Tomato & Basil; First and Last Original Traditional Pasta Sauce, Meat Flavored; and First and Last Original Puttanesca Sauce, Mildly Hot & Spicy.
These sauces were distributed in Connecticut and Massachusetts through Big Y and Stop & Shop retail stores beginning September 22, 2025. All recalled items are packaged in 26 fluid ounce jars with a use-by date of 09/26.
The company has suspended sales and production of the sauces to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements. No illnesses related to these products have been reported so far.
According to the company, "The products were manufactured without an approved scheduled process or otherwise evaluated to determine if the process is adequate. Failure to appropriately process acidified or low-acid canned foods can result in Clostridium botulinum toxin formation."
Botulism is a serious form of food poisoning that can be fatal. Symptoms may include general weakness, dizziness, double vision, difficulty speaking or swallowing, trouble breathing, muscle weakness, abdominal distension, and constipation. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek immediate medical attention.
Consumers who purchased any of the recalled sauces are advised to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For questions about the recall, customers can contact First and Last Bakery at 860-956-5000 between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm Eastern Standard Time from Monday through Friday.
