Two Mexican nationals have been charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine after law enforcement found approximately 72 pounds of the drug in their vehicle.

Alejandra Diaz-Alcantar, 45, and Juan Alberto Alvarado-Gonzalez, 31, were arrested after an Oregon State Police K9 trooper stopped their white Chevrolet pickup on Interstate 5 in Lane County. The stop was part of an ongoing investigation. Authorities searched the vehicle under a warrant and discovered two duffel bags containing 56 plastic bags and bindles suspected to be methamphetamine.

The Drug Enforcement Administration is leading the investigation, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Huynh is prosecuting the case.

"A criminal complaint is only an accusation of a crime, and a defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty."

Law enforcement officials involved in the case have chosen not to be identified by name.
