The War Department has launched GenAI.mil, a new artificial intelligence platform designed to provide advanced AI tools to military and civilian personnel. The first capability available on the platform is Google Cloud's Gemini for Government, which aims to support an "AI-first" workforce across the Department.

This rollout follows a directive from President Donald Trump in July 2025 that called for the United States to achieve technological superiority in AI. According to the War Department, these capabilities are now accessible on desktops at the Pentagon and other American military installations worldwide.

GenAI.mil will eventually host several leading AI models. The platform is part of efforts to implement the White House's AI Action Plan announced earlier this year, expanding access to generative AI technology for all civilians, contractors, and military staff within the Department.

Emil Michael, Under Secretary of War for Research and Engineering, said: "There is no prize for second place in the global race for AI dominance. We are moving rapidly to deploy powerful AI capabilities like Gemini for Government directly to our workforce. AI is America's next Manifest Destiny, and we're ensuring that we dominate this new frontier."

The development of GenAI.mil was led by the War Department's Office of Research & Engineering through its AI Rapid Capabilities Cell. The initiative reflects core priorities such as reviving a warrior ethos and strengthening deterrence with technological advancements.

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth stated: "We are pushing all of our chips in on artificial intelligence as a fighting force. The Department is tapping into America's commercial genius, and we're embedding generative AI into our daily battle rhythm." He added: "AI tools present boundless opportunities to increase efficiency, and we are thrilled to witness AI's future positive impact across the War Department."

All employees will receive free training on using GenAI.mil. These sessions aim to help staff become confident users of AI technologies. Security remains a priority; all tools provided through GenAI.mil meet certification standards for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) and Impact Level 5 (IL5), making them suitable for operational use.

Gemini for Government offers features such as natural language conversation and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). It uses Google Search integration to ensure reliable outputs while reducing risks associated with incorrect or misleading information from AI systems.

According to the War Department, GenAI.mil marks another step toward enhancing operational effectiveness by integrating advanced technology throughout its operations.
