U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, has criticized the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for not responding to Republican inquiries regarding its commitment to conduct a safety study on a chemical abortion drug and its approval of another generic version.
In October, Cassidy and 16 other Republican senators asked the FDA for information about why an additional generic form of the abortion drug was approved. They also requested updates on the progress of the agency’s promised safety study and questioned why measures to protect women have not been reinstated.
Cassidy stated, “As chair of the HELP Committee and a strong pro-life conservative, FDA’s response to Congress is unacceptable. Republicans have been pressing FDA to provide answers on the status of its promised safety study of the chemical abortion drug and information about the second generic’s approval. The American people deserve to know why HHS and FDA continue to ignore their responsibility to safeguard mothers and unborn children from this harmful drug.”
