Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau met with Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner in Washington, DC. The meeting focused on collaboration as the DRC prepares to join the United Nations Security Council. They addressed ongoing violence in eastern DRC following recent advances by M23, a group reportedly supported by Rwandan forces.
According to Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott, "The Deputy Secretary conveyed the United States expects the full adherence to and implementation of the Washington Accords and is prepared to take action to enforce adherence." Both officials recognized opportunities for private sector investment as a means to support peace and stability in the region.
They agreed that such investment could benefit all parties involved.
