Cassidy joins HHS Secretary Kennedy in announcing policy on child gender transition procedures

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), who serves as chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, joined Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr at an event in Washington to announce a new Trump administration policy aimed at restricting gender transition procedures for children.

“American tax dollars should never fund dangerous child sex-change operations and irreversible procedures. As Chairman of the HELP Committee, I am proud to work alongside the Trump administration to protect children,” said Dr. Cassidy.

Earlier this year, Senator Cassidy introduced the No Subsidies for Gender Transition Procedures Act. The proposed legislation seeks to prohibit federal funding for gender transition procedures under Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Affordable Care Act. In addition to legislative efforts, Cassidy is investigating medical organizations, provider groups, and insurers that promote gender transition procedures for minors without what he describes as reliable scientific data. He has called on these entities to comply with President Trump’s executive order designed to prevent chemical and surgical castration of children.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee plays a central role in shaping public health policy and federal regulations affecting health and education across the United States (official website). As chair during the 119th Congress (official website), Cassidy oversees committee activities that include oversight of federal laws and agencies such as the FDA and NIH (official website). The committee’s responsibilities also extend to supporting worker rights and retirement programs (official website).
