The United States has imposed sanctions on seven family members of individuals associated with the Maduro regime in Venezuela. The move follows the December 11 designation of Carlos Erik Malpica Flores, who is a nephew of Nicolás Maduro, and Ramón Carretero Napolitano, a businessman from Panama accused of facilitating corruption linked to the Venezuelan government.
According to the U.S. Department of State, these new sanctions target relatives determined to be responsible for or complicit in deceptive actions or corruption involving the Venezuelan state. Those sanctioned include Maduro’s sister-in-law and other relatives of Malpica Flores, as well as two immediate family members of Carretero.
A spokesperson stated: "Maduro and his cronies have devastated Venezuela’s economy and continue to threaten our region’s stability. The Trump Administration is committed to disrupting the network of individuals who prop up Maduro and his regime."
The action was taken under Executive Order 13850. Additional details can be found in the Department of the Treasury’s press release.
