On January 3, 1777, General George Washington and the Continental Army achieved a significant victory over British forces at the Battle of Princeton. This event is recognized as a turning point in the American Revolution that helped renew the momentum for independence.

The victory came during what historians call the “Ten Crucial Days” after Washington’s crossing of the Delaware River. The Continental Army managed to repel a British attack at Trenton before secretly moving their forces under cover of darkness to confront the British garrison at Princeton. To deceive the enemy, campfires were left burning and sentries remained in place while the main force advanced toward Princeton.

During the battle, British troops initially gained an advantage by overrunning an American position and fatally wounding Brigadier General Hugh Mercer. As more American soldiers arrived, Washington led from the front lines and rallied his troops to press forward. This effort broke through British defenses and forced them to retreat.

According to a statement released on the anniversary of this event: "That day, General Washington’s men won a crucial victory, revived our national spirit, and breathed new life into the cause of independence throughout the Colonies. Nearly two and a half centuries later, the patriots’ renewed spirit of determination remains an enduring symbol of American strength, resilience, and grit. Today, we pledge to continue the work of saving our country with the courage that burned in the hearts of the warriors at Princeton 249 years ago. We honor their valiant legacy. We vow to protect our inheritance of liberty against all enemies and to forge a future worthy of their sacrifice."

The Battle of Princeton is remembered as an important moment in American history that contributed to shaping national identity.
