U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited An Achievable Dream Middle & High School in Newport News, Virginia, as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s national History Rocks! Trail to Independence tour. The event, which also featured Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, is one stop on a tour designed to promote civic literacy among students and celebrate America’s upcoming 250th birthday.

More than 200 high school students participated in interactive activities aimed at helping them connect with the founding principles of the United States and learn about Virginia’s role in the Revolutionary War. The program included remarks from Secretary McMahon, Dr. Lee Vreeland (President & CEO of An Achievable Dream), Mayor Phillip Jones, Dr. Terri Best (Chairman of the Newport News School Board), and Dr. Michele Mitchell (Superintendent of Newport News Public Schools). Principal Debbie Hudgins and Teacher Lori Buck led the student-centered portion of the event.

“It was a joy to visit Virginia today and celebrate America’s founding, honoring the Commonwealth’s storied contributions to our great republic - the birthplace of eight U.S. Presidents! As we approach our nation's 250th anniversary, understanding our founding principles and the rights guaranteed to American citizens has never been more important,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon. “History Rocks! encourages students to take an active role in shaping America’s future and to develop the knowledge and skills needed to lead with integrity and civic responsibility.”

Governor Youngkin stated: “It was an honor to join Secretary McMahon in Newport News to highlight the importance of civics education. The Commonwealth of Virginia played a key role in America’s first 250 years, and it’s important to take any opportunity to inspire the next generation to make an impact in the future.”

The History Rocks! initiative is part of broader efforts by the Department of Education for America 250 celebrations. It works with organizations such as the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and over 50 other national and state partners through the America 250 Civics Education Coalition. This coalition seeks to improve civic education by providing opportunities for students across all states to engage with American history through hands-on learning experiences.

Secretary McMahon and other officials plan visits nationwide as part of this initiative, highlighting effective civics instruction that connects students with foundational American values while encouraging them to consider their responsibilities as citizens.
