Tri-Union Seafoods issues warning on distribution of previously recalled Genova tuna

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Tri-Union Seafoods has issued a new warning to consumers after discovering that quarantined Genova tuna products, previously recalled in February 2025, were inadvertently distributed by a third-party distributor. The initial recall was prompted by a notification from the company’s supplier about a manufacturing defect in the “easy open” pull tab can lid. This defect could compromise the product seal, potentially leading to leaks or contamination with clostridium botulinum, which can cause severe food poisoning.

The affected tuna cans were sent to select retail locations: Meijer stores in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin; Giant Foods stores in Maryland and Virginia; and Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and Pavilions stores in California.

Customers are advised not to consume the recalled tuna even if it appears normal. Anyone who feels unwell after consuming these products should seek immediate medical attention.

Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled items are encouraged to return them to the store for a full refund or dispose of them safely. Tri-Union Seafoods is also offering retrieval kits and coupons for replacement products upon request. Customers can contact the company at support@thaiunionhelp.zendesk.com or call 833-374-0171 during business hours (Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST) for further information or assistance.
