The House of Representatives has passed H.R. 6359, the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act, which aims to protect the educational rights of pregnant students. The bill is intended to ensure that women do not have to choose between their education and carrying a pregnancy to term.

Education and Workforce Committee Chairman Tim Walberg (R-MI) expressed his support for the legislation following its passage in the House. “Women should never have to choose between continuing their education or carrying their child to term. This legislation empowers and supports them in building the best possible future for themselves and their children, and I am glad to see it pass the House. When students know their rights, they are empowered to stay enrolled, stay engaged, and succeed,” said Chairman Walberg.

Representative Ashley Hinson (R-IA), who sponsored the bill, also commented on its importance. "College students who are pregnant or may become unexpectedly pregnant deserve to know every right and resource available to them, and it is unacceptable that so many often feel they have to choose between finishing their education and having their baby. My legislation empowers young women to choose life and ensures they have the information on their rights and resources necessary to build the best future for themselves and their child. I’m thrilled to see my bill pass the House as we continue to pursue policies that help families grow and thrive," said Rep. Hinson.

The legislation is part of ongoing efforts by lawmakers focused on supporting students facing pregnancy while pursuing higher education.
