Cassidy responds to plastic surgeons’ warning on child gender transition surgeries

U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA), who serves as chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee, issued a statement regarding the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' (ASPS) recent public acknowledgment of risks associated with gender transition procedures on minors.

“Dangerous, irreversible gender transition surgeries on children must end. ASPS is right to acknowledge this reality. Others should follow suit,” said Dr. Cassidy. “As Chairman of the HELP Committee, I will continue to work with President Trump to protect children from irreversible harm.”

Senator Cassidy has been examining practices by major medical organizations and insurers related to promoting gender transition procedures for children in the absence of what he considers reliable scientific evidence. He has urged these groups to comply with an executive order from President Trump that seeks to prevent minors from undergoing chemical and surgical interventions for gender transition.

Recently, Senator Cassidy appeared alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. at an event introducing a new policy that blocks federal funding for such procedures involving minors. Additionally, he introduced legislation titled the No Subsidies for Gender Transition Procedures Act, which would prohibit taxpayer-funded coverage of these procedures under Medicaid, Medicare, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and the Affordable Care Act.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee is responsible for legislating on public health matters as well as overseeing federal agencies like the FDA and NIH. The committee also influences national policies related to education and labor sectors while providing oversight over relevant federal laws and agencies (official website). During the 119th Congress, Bill Cassidy served as chair of this committee (official website).
