China has convicted Kwok Yin-sang, the father of Hong Kong dissident Anna Kwok, under a new national security law. The move has drawn criticism from U.S. lawmakers.

Chairman John Moolenaar of the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) commented on the situation. “The CCP’s prosecution of a dissident's father in an attempt to pressure his daughter is reprehensible. This is blatant transnational repression that is meant to intimidate and bully a courageous woman who spoke out against the CCP’s tyranny. I stand with the Kwok family and all of the dissidents in Hong Kong who are working for freedom and liberty,” said Moolenaar.

Anna Kwok is known as a pro-democracy leader from Hong Kong who now lives in exile due to actions by the Chinese government. In 2023, authorities offered a bounty of one million Hong Kong dollars for her arrest.

The statement noted that targeting relatives for peaceful advocacy is characteristic of authoritarian regimes rather than societies governed by rule of law. It also argued that this case shows how the Chinese Communist Party uses Hong Kong’s legal system to silence dissent.

Moolenaar stated, “The Select Committee stands in solidarity with Anna Kwok and with the many Hong Kongers who continue to face intimidation, arbitrary detention, and politically motivated prosecution. The erosion of Hong Kong’s autonomy and rule of law is a direct breach of Beijing’s international commitments and a threat to democratic values worldwide.”
