Dearay Wilson, a 30-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder while armed for his involvement in the shooting death of Jeremy Black on June 29, 2021. The plea was entered before Superior Court Judge Neal E. Kravitz, who ordered Wilson to remain held without bond until sentencing. Sentencing is scheduled for April 10, 2026.
According to court documents, Wilson and three others were armed when they drove to Johnson Avenue Northwest. Upon arrival, they fired more than 45 rounds at a group of people outside an apartment building on the 1400 block of R Street Northwest. Jeremy Black, age 50, was walking through the area with his wife and two friends after dinner when he and another friend crossed Johnson Avenue as the gunfire erupted. Black was struck by a single bullet to his left torso and died from his injuries. Authorities state that Wilson and his accomplices fled in a stolen vehicle after the incident.
The announcement was made by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll of the Metropolitan Police Department. The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Lindsey Merikas, Kathleen Gibbons, and Sarah Santiago. Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Sitara Witanachchi indicted the case.
