Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Education Dr. Murray Bessette visited Brookfield Central High School in Wisconsin as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s History Rocks! Trail to Independence tour. The visit is one stop on a national initiative aimed at improving civic literacy among students ahead of America’s 250th anniversary.

More than 300 students from grades nine through twelve took part in interactive activities designed to increase their knowledge of American history and civics. The event also highlighted Wisconsin’s contributions to the nation’s development and encouraged discussions about civic engagement and patriotism. Opening remarks were given by Principal Brett Gruetzmacher and Elmbrook School District Superintendent Dr. Mark Hansen, followed by Dr. Bessette.

“Wisconsin has long played an important role in our nation’s civic life, producing leaders and communities deeply committed to public service and education,” said Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary Dr. Murray Bessette. “As we approach our nation’s 250th anniversary, the History Rocks! tour helps students in places like Brookfield connect with our founding principles and better understand the role they can play in shaping America’s future.”

The History Rocks! initiative is part of the Department of Education's broader plans for America's Semiquincentennial celebrations, organized in partnership with Freedom 250 and coordinated with the America 250 Civics Education Coalition. As part of these efforts, department officials plan to visit schools across all states to highlight effective approaches to teaching history and civics.

Freedom 250 is responsible for leading presidential programming for the country’s upcoming milestone birthday, aiming to bring Americans together around shared values such as honoring history, preserving freedoms, and fostering opportunities for future generations.

The America 250 Civics Education Coalition brings together national organizations—including the America First Policy Institute, Turning Point USA, Hillsdale College, and over fifty others—to promote civic education initiatives that help students learn about key ideas, people, and events that shape American identity.
