ICE lodges detainer against man accused of killing three-year-old nephew in Florida

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Mar. 11 that it has lodged an immigration detainer against Samuel Antonio Maldonado-Erazo, who is accused of abusing and murdering his three-year-old nephew in Florida on March 4.

The case involves serious allegations of child abuse and highlights concerns about the handling of individuals with unresolved immigration status. ICE said Maldonado-Erazo is a criminal illegal alien who entered the United States illegally in August 2021 and was released into the country under current federal policies.

According to ICE Director Todd M. Lyons, "This crime is absolutely sickening. This little boy suffered extensively and died when his mother abandoned him to Maldonado-Erazo’s ‘care’ — and Maldonado-Erazo himself is an illegal alien who never should’ve been in this country in the first place. I encourage parents to self-deport with their children, but even if they choose not to do that, ICE gives them the opportunity to be removed with their kids. But despite that option, Reyes chose to leave her son here with a violent murderer who took his life." The child's mother, Wendy Esther Hernandez Reyes, had been removed from the U.S. on Jan. 26 but did not take her U.S.-citizen child with her.

Maldonado-Erazo was encountered by ICE at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Jail after his arrest for allegedly causing fatal injuries consistent with sustained abuse. Local authorities reported severe trauma including multiple head injuries, bruising, burns, broken bones, and internal injuries leading to cardiac arrest.

Prior to this incident, Maldonado-Erazo reportedly had no criminal history in the United States aside from entering illegally but now faces manslaughter charges. His wife has also been taken into custody while their three children are under the care of Florida's Department of Child Services.

ICE stated it will seek removal proceedings against Maldonado-Erazo if he is released from local custody.
