Diane J. Sabatino highlights CBP drug seizure and World Cup border readiness

Executive Assistant Commissioner Diane J. Sabatino of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) shared updates on recent border security activities and preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026 in a series of posts on March 19 and 20, 2026.

On March 19, Sabatino highlighted a significant drug seizure by CBP officers at Laredo with assistance from the K9 team. She wrote, "Our dedicated @DFOLaredo CBP officers with the help of our #K9 team uncovered an astounding 129.63 lbs (54 packages) of alleged cocaine valued at over $1.7 million hidden in a commercial truck. Thanks to our officers for keeping our communities safe." This operation underscores ongoing efforts by CBP to intercept narcotics trafficked across U.S. borders.

Later that day, Sabatino emphasized the importance of canine units in border operations, stating, "CBP K9 teams are a critical part of the border security mission. Working alongside frontline officers, these highly trained dogs help detect narcotics, concealed currency, and other contraband, using their powerful sense of smell to uncover what smugglers try to hide.

In anticipation of increased international travel due to the FIFA World Cup 2026, Sabatino posted on March 20: "Welcome to the U.S.! As fans travel for the @FIFAWorldCup 2026, CBP is ready to ensure a safe, secure, and smooth entry process. Have your documents ready and follow the signs as you arrive.

The use of canine teams is a longstanding practice within CBP’s strategy for detecting illicit substances and contraband at U.S. borders. These dogs undergo rigorous training programs designed to enhance their ability to identify drugs and other prohibited items during inspections alongside human officers.

CBP routinely increases staffing levels and implements special procedures during large-scale events such as global sports tournaments to manage higher traveler volumes while maintaining security protocols.
