The Trump Administration announced on Apr. 16 that efforts to combat identity fraud and theft in federal student aid programs have resulted in more than $1 billion in savings for American taxpayers. The U.S. Department of Education said it implemented new measures last year to protect critical programs such as Pell Grants and federal student loans from fraudulent activity.

This announcement highlights the importance of safeguarding public funds intended for students and families, rather than allowing them to be diverted by criminals. The department stated that these actions ensure taxpayer investments are used appropriately during a time when higher education institutions have faced increased risks of fraud.

According to the department, the COVID-19 pandemic led many colleges and universities to move classes online, which coincided with what officials described as a reduction in verification safeguards under the Biden Administration. During this period, schools across the country reported being targeted by sophisticated fraud rings and sought assistance from federal authorities.

In response, beginning in summer 2025, all institutions of higher education were required to validate the identities of certain first-time Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) applicants. The department credited this measure with preventing significant losses across several states: California ($171 million), Virginia ($93 million), Texas ($76 million), Florida ($55 million), Washington ($32 million), New York ($31 million), Louisiana ($31 million), Connecticut ($28 million), Colorado ($24 million), and Georgia ($22 million).

The department emphasized its ongoing commitment to eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse throughout government operations. A new White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud has been established under the leadership of the Vice President as part of these continued efforts.
