Barry Anderson, a 68-year-old resident of Findlay, Ohio, pleaded guilty on Apr. 20 to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and mail fraud for his role in a multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme involving his employer.

The case highlights efforts by federal authorities to address financial crimes that impact businesses and communities in northern Ohio. The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio enforces federal criminal laws related to national security and public corruption while defending the United States in civil suits, according to the official website.

Court documents show that Anderson was employed for over two decades by a multinational company specializing in industrial explosives and technical services. In his capacity as regional president, Anderson worked with Gregory Shuey, owner of a backhoe and dump truck business, to submit 373 fraudulent invoices between 2016 and 2023. These invoices were either inflated or entirely fabricated for services never performed. Payments totaling approximately $2.4 million were made from Anderson's employer to Shuey's business; Shuey then deposited these funds into an account he controlled before splitting them with Anderson.

Additionally, Anderson orchestrated false lease agreements using limited liability companies (LLCs) that he and associates owned. These LLCs purchased properties which they then leased back to Anderson’s employer under concealed arrangements from 2014 through 2023, resulting in about $954,330 paid out via fraudulent rental invoices.

Anderson’s sentencing date has not yet been set; a federal district court judge will determine the sentence after reviewing applicable guidelines and statutory factors. The investigation was conducted by the FBI Cleveland Division.
