Five plead guilty in St. Louis area mail theft and check fraud scheme

Five individuals have admitted their roles in a series of mail thefts from collection boxes in the St. Louis area, according to an April 23 announcement by federal authorities.

The case highlights ongoing efforts to address crimes involving stolen mail and altered checks, which can impact both businesses and residents. Authorities say these offenses can lead to significant financial losses for victims.

Roderick Orlandez Walker pleaded guilty to conspiracy, two counts of mail theft, and possession of stolen mail. He admitted that he participated in purchasing an arrow key—a tool used by postal workers to open collection boxes—from a carrier in the Marine Villa neighborhood on July 20, 2023. Investigators tracked a rental car linked to Walker and Marissa Diane Worthen during the incident. Evidence showed that Worthen, Walker, and Yahtis Niquae Bailey were present at the purchase of the key.

Walker also admitted being involved when mail was stolen from a Ladue collection box on July 25, 2023, and using an arrow key for another theft in Frontenac on October 12. Postal inspectors later found checks taken from various locations during a search of an Airbnb used by the group. They discovered check-writing software on Walker’s laptop along with messages about altering checks; forensic analysis revealed hundreds of images of suspected stolen checks with face values exceeding $2.2 million.

Other defendants received sentences ranging from eight months to just over one year after pleading guilty or being convicted on related charges such as conspiracy or stealing keys adopted by the Post Office. All were ordered to pay restitution amounts reflecting their involvement.
