News Release: Jonathan Letterman was born in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania in 1824. The son of a surgeon, Letterman graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1849. He became an assistant surgeon in the Army Medical Department. Prior to the Civil War, he served on military campaigns against Native Americans. When the Civil War began, he was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. In June 1862, Letterman was promoted to major and appointed Medical Director of the Army.
