On May 16, 2024, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen, alongside Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, Senior Advisor for International Climate Policy John Podesta, National Economic Advisor Lael Brainard, and National Climate Advisor Ali Zaidi announced the release of a Joint Statement of Policy and new Principles for Responsible Participation in Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs). CDT Europe panel discusses strategies to combat spyware in the EU

On May 15, CDT Europe convened an online panel event titled "Exploring Ways Forward to Combat Spyware in the EU." DoD grants $14.9 million to boost North American cobalt and graphite supply chain

The Department of Defense (DoD) has awarded $6.5 million and $8.4 million to Canadian companies Fortune Minerals Limited (Fortune) and Lomiko Metals, Inc. (Lomiko), respectively. The funding is part of the Defense Production Act Investment (DPAI) program, designed to bolster the U.S.-Canadian Joint Action Plan on Critical Minerals. The grants aim to strengthen the cobalt and graphite supply chains in line with the 2024 National Defense Industrial Strategy's commitment to support domestic production of critical minerals.


CCIA urges caution before implementing new AI regulations

U.S. Treasury sanctions cybercrime network linked to malicious botnet

On May 16, 2024, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated three individuals and three entities associated with the malicious botnet tied to the residential proxy service known as 911 S5. The individuals sanctioned are Yunhe Wang, Jingping Liu, and Yanni Zheng. The entities include Spicy Code Company Limited, Tulip Biz Pattaya Group Company Limited, and Lily Suites Company Limited.

Justice Department secures agreement to cease HIV discriminatory law enforcement

The Justice Department has announced that the Shelby County, Tennessee, District Attorney General (DA) has reached an agreement to halt the prosecution of individuals living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) under Tennessee’s aggravated prostitution law. The DA will also implement reforms to rectify discrimination against people living with HIV who have been subjected to discriminatory and harsher penalties under this law.
