Department of the Interior publishes 897 notices in 2020

There were 897 notices published by the Department of the Interior in 2020, according to the Federal Register.

The most recent notice, National Register of Historic Places; Notification of Pending Nominations and Related Actions, was submitted on Dec. 30, 2020.

The Department of the Interior published 1,020 the year before, marking a 12.1 percent decrease.

The most notices were published in August with 100, while April saw the fewest notices published with 53.

The Department oversees more than 500 million acres of land.

Downsizing the Federal Government, a project aimed at lowering taxes and boosting federal efficiency, said the department’s actions have contributed to a growing water crisis and holds many lands which could be better managed.

Notices are required documents detailing rules and regulations being proposed by each federal department. This allows the public to see what issues legislators and federal departments are focusing on.

Any person or organization can comment on the proposed rules. Departments and agencies must then address “significant issues raised in comments and discuss any changes made,” the Federal Register says.
