The California Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is enforcing fire restrictions on public lands in response to growing fire hazards and diminishing firefighting resources, according to a press release from the BLM.
“Because of ongoing drought and extremely dry vegetation, fire danger is extreme," Dereck Wilson, manager of the BLM’s Northern California District said. “Across Northern California, we are seeing explosive fire behavior, with fast-growing fires burning forests and ranges, and threatening communities."
The release stated affected public lands include those maintained by the Arcata Field Office in Humboldt, Mendocino, Del Norte, and Trinity counties. Until further notice, campfires, barbecues, and the use of open flames, including camp stoves, are prohibited.
Several wildfire prevention measures remain in place including a ban on smoking, except in designated areas, as well as bans on possessing or using pyrotechnics.
Individuals who violate these restrictions face a fine of up to $100,000, a year in prison or both. Violators may also be required to pay restitution for total fire suppression and damage expenses.
