September marks the end of summer where days of sunshine and warm weather are met with crisp undertones in the air and the green vibrant leaves of August convert to autumn yellows and oranges.

September motivates many outdoor enthusiasts to immerse themselves in nature and appreciate all that fall has to offer, which could be why on Aug. 31, President Joe Biden proclaimed September 2021 as National Wilderness Month, according to a press release from the White House. The president's proclamation was motivated by the ever-worsening climate crisis and species extinction.

"During National Wilderness Month, we affirm that our Nation’s public lands and waters must be accessible to all Americans, we recognize that our lands and waters can revitalize the soul and solidify our respect for the natural wonders that surround us and the earth we share, and we recommit to their preservation and protection, today and for future generations," Biden said.

The U.S. Census Bureau reports 54 areas, approximately 9.1 million acres in 13 states, were designated as wilderness during the passage of the Wilderness Act in 1964. Today, there are over 800 wilderness areas, covering 111 million acres in 45 states and Puerto Rico.

“In our Nation's earliest days, a vast majority of North America was wilderness—from majestic plains and imposing mountain ranges to dense forests and rushing waterways," USCB stated. "Today, protected wild spaces continue to serve as a backdrop for curious and adventurous Americans to seek the thrill and joy of connecting with the sacred spirit of our country's wilderness, offering a wide variety of activities including hiking, camping, and climbing. This month, as we cherish our vast and vibrant natural heritage, we resolve to preserve its splendors for all who will follow in our footsteps.”

The press release states the proclamation falls in line with the Administration's “America the Beautiful” initiative that sets a national conservation goal to invest in, conserve, connect, and restore at least 30% of the Nation’s lands and waters by 2030.

"During National Wilderness Month, let us strengthen our connection to the American wilderness areas, support their designation and protection, and work to preserve the stories they tell, the memories they create, and the heritage they reflect for all Americans for generations to come," Biden said.
