WASHINGTON—Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today swore in Cynthia A. Glassman as the Commerce Department’s Under Secretary for Economic Affairs.
"I am very pleased to have Cyndi Glassman as part of the Commerce team," Secretary Gutierrez said. "She has impressive experience as a Commissioner of the Securities and Exchange Commission, as an expert in the financial services sector and at the Federal Reserve Board and the Department of Treasury that will serve American business well.
"Cyndi will work with me to ensure that our federal statistical system provides the best data to inform decisions, including convening our new Advisory Committee on Measuring Innovation in the 21st Century. We will also work together to ensure the best census possible in 2010," said Gutierrez.
Dr. Glassman is a native of Brooklyn, NY. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and her B.A. in Economics from Wellesley College.
Prior to her nomination as Under Secretary by President Bush, Dr. Glassman served as an SEC Commissioner from Jan. 28, 2002, until July 14th, 2006. She was Acting Chairman during the summer of 2005.
Dr. Glassman spent over 30 years in the public and private sectors focusing on financial services regulatory and public policy issues. She spent the first 12 years of her career at the Federal Reserve, first at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and subsequently at the Board of Governors, where her positions included Chief of the Financial Reports Section and Special Assistant to Governor Henry C. Wallich.
