WASHINGTON—U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos M. Gutierrez today issued the following statement on the April Employment Report that showed that 88,000 jobs were created in April and the unemployment rate was a low 4.5 percent.
“Today’s jobs report shows the U.S. economy continued to create jobs for the 44th straight month. With 88,000 new jobs created in April and nearly 8 million new jobs created since August 2003, this is an economy that’s overcome adversity and proven its strength and resilience time and again. President Bush’s pro-growth policies have provided incentives for growth and allowed Americans to keep more of their own money, provide for their families and create jobs. The President’s policies have delivered results.
“In order to continue creating jobs each month, we must continue to open new markets for American goods and services. We look forward to working with Congress to pass pending free trade agreements and extend trade promotion authority. When we break down barriers to trade and investment, we create opportunity and prosperity for American workers and farmers.”
