Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank congratulated President Obama for signing H.R. 6156 today, which authorizes the president to establish Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) with Russia and Moldova. The legislation is critical to allowing U.S. companies to take advantage of the full benefits of Russia’s recent accession into the World Trade Organization. U.S. exports to Russia rose 40 percent in 2011, and U.S. exports to Russia have more than doubled over the past decade.
Acting Secretary Blank joined the president, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, members of Congress, and representatives from U.S. businesses and organizations at a signing ceremony at the White House to mark this historic event.
“Today, the president signed into law legislation that will help U.S. businesses increase exports and support American jobs,” said Acting U.S. Commerce Secretary Rebecca Blank. “Establishing Permanent Normal Trade Relations with Russia and Moldova is a critical step to ensuring that our businesses are able to compete on a level playing field and that they enjoy increased access to these growing markets. This legislation is a win-win for American businesses and workers.”
