For Immediate Release DHS Press Office Contact: 202-282-8010 LONDON—Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano was in London today to meet with international security leaders and join counterparts from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Commission and the United States, during the G6+1 Ministerial Meeting.
“Today, threats transcend national borders, impacting the security and economic prosperity of the entire international community,” said Secretary Napolitano. “We will continue to collaborate with our international partners to develop a global approach to the challenges and threats we all face.” Secretary Napolitano met bilaterally with Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernandez Diaz, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Cecilia Malmström, and German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich to discuss a range of security related issues including border and transportation security, cybersecurity, and international collaboration to secure the global security chain and combat transnational crime.
Secretary Napolitano also participated in a G6+1 discussion on international collaboration on countering violent extremism. Over the past year, the Department of Homeland Security, Europol, and EU partners have exchanged information on U.S. and EU based fusion center best practices, countering violent extremism training standards, research and case studies, including discussing lessons learned from the 2011 Norway attacks.
Yesterday, Secretary Napolitano met with international security leaders and joined counterparts from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Commission and the United States, at the start of the biannual G6+1 Ministerial Meeting, and signed a joint declaration that advances transatlantic efforts to enhance online safety for children with European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes.
