For Immediate Release DHS Press Office Contact: 202-282-8010 PARIS — Today, Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas attended an International Ministerial meeting with Attorney General Eric Holder in Paris convened by French Minister of Interior Bernard Cazeneuve, to discuss a range of shared security-related priorities, including counterterrorism efforts, foreign fighters, and countering violent extremism in the aftermath of the tragic terrorist incidents in Paris last week. While in Paris, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas also met with French Prime Minister Manuel Valls and French President François Hollande.
During the meetings, Deputy Secretary Mayorkas met with his international counterparts to reiterate the key link between the United States’ security and that of our international partners, including the collective concern of foreign fighter travel to and from Syria and efforts to counter violent extremism. Deputy Secretary Mayorkas highlighted the importance of sharing information with our global friends and allies about violent extremists who return to our countries after traveling abroad.
Deputy Secretary Mayorkas stressed that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will not hesitate to adjust our security posture, as appropriate, to protect the American people. DHS routinely shares information with international law enforcement and our intelligence and homeland security partners, to ensure our collective security.
Over the last year, Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson and Deputy Secretary Mayorkas traveled abroad to meet with their international counterparts to underscore the importance of these issues.
