The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is weighing the enactment of a rule supporters say could drastically reduce methane and other harmful air pollution from both new and existing sources in the oil and natural gas industry.

The rule under consideration is designed to “expand and strengthen emissions reduction requirements” that are currently in place for new, modified and reconstructed oil and natural gas sources. For the time the proposed rule will also require states to reduce methane emissions from up to thousands of existing sources across the country.

EPA officials are slated to hold a two-day virtual public hearing on the so-called Clean Act rule beginning Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Registration to speak at the hearing is open and interested parties can visit https://www.epa.gov/controlling-air-pollution-oil-and-natural-gas-industry/public-hearing-epas-proposal-reduce-methane for more information.

EPA officials will also accept comments on the proposal in writing up until Jan. 14, with the agency vowing that those comments will receive the same as any made during the public hearing.

Instructions for submitting written comment are available at https://www.epa.gov/system/files/documents/2021-11/epas-2021-oil-and-gas-proposal.-how-to-comment.pdf
