The following media advisory was published by the Department of Interior on Sept. 28, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

ATLANTA – Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell will join U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Deputy Administrator Bob Perciasepe and hundreds of volunteers at the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta, Georgia, to commemorate the 20th annual National Public Lands Day (NPLD).

Secretary Jewell and hundreds of volunteers will participate in activities such as pulling weeds at the “I Have a Dream” International World Peace Rose Garden, removing invasive plants at Freedom Park, and cleaning the interior of Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was baptized, ordained and served as a co-pastor until his tragic death in 1968.

National Public Lands Day is the largest, single-day volunteer effort on behalf of parks and other public lands. This year more than 180,000 volunteers are expected to volunteer at nearly 2,200 sites across the country.

The National Environmental Education Foundation coordinates National Public Lands Day, which this year will include participation by eight federal agencies and more than 250 state, county and city partners, and nonprofit organizations.
