WASHINGTON – In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and in celebration of this year’s National Park Service Centennial, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis will join the Student Conservation Association for a day of service on Monday, January 18.
Secretary Jewell, Director Jarvis and more than 500 volunteers will join together at Anacostia Park to participate in a shoreline cleanup to improve the health of the Anacostia River while encouraging the next generation to “Find Your Park” and become lifelong stewards of America’s public lands.
The event is sponsored by the Student Conservation Association with support from American Express, which last year announced a $5 million commitment to help the Interior Department reach its goal of one million volunteers on public lands annually. This public-private partnership is part of a national movement to invest in and help prepare the next generation of conservation stewards and leaders by providing meaningful and lasting opportunities to play, learn, serve and work in the great outdoors.
American Express is also a partner of the National Park Foundation’s “Find Your Park” campaign, designed to inspire people of all backgrounds to discover our country’s national resources and diverse cultural heritage in celebration of the National Park Service Centennial.
The Centennial celebration marks the National Park Service’s 100-year milestone with the goal of connecting with and creating the next generation of park visitors, supporters and advocates.
