LAS VEGAS – Following today’s official launch of President Obama’s Every Kid in a Park initiative , on Wednesday, Sept. 2, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell and Managing Director at the White House Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) Christy Goldfuss will host the nation’s first official ‘Every Kid in a Park’ event in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jewell and Goldfuss will join 65 fourth-grade students from West Preparatory Academy, a Title 1 school serving low-income children in East Las Vegas, at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area to go on a hike and distribute some of the first free passes to America’s federal lands and waters.
The Every Kid in a Park program seeks to connect young people with the great outdoors. The program allows fourth graders nationwide to go to www.everykidinapark.gov and obtain a pass for free entry for them and their families to more than 2,000 federally managed lands and waters nationwide for an entire year, starting Sept. 1, 2015.
Earlier this year, President Obama announced Every Kid in a Park as part of his commitment to protect our nation’s unique outdoor spaces and ensure that every American has the opportunity to visit and enjoy them.
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, managed by the Bureau of Land Management, features spectacular desert landscapes and climbing and hiking opportunities. A destination for more than one million visitors each year, Red Rock is located just 15 minutes west of the Las Vegas Strip.
