WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, Deputy Secretary of the Interior Mike Connor will address the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention in Anchorage where he will discuss the progress of Interior projects and programs affecting Alaska Natives, and how they are helping to strengthen rural economic development.
As part of President Obama's commitment to help Native Americans build strong, prosperous and resilient communities, Deputy Secretary Connor is visiting Alaska from October 21- 23 to meet with Native leaders and state and federal officials on a range of topics, including land conveyance, energy development, subsistence fish and wildlife management, and protecting natural resources impacted by climate change.
Through the work of the White House Council on Native American Affairs , chaired by Secretary Sally Jewell, Interior works to improve federal interagency coordination and efficiency, promoting tribal-federal partnerships in education, energy and economic development and environmental conservation and adaptation.
The Alaska Federation of Natives is the largest statewide Native organization in Alaska. Its membership includes 151 federally-recognized tribes, 134 village corporations, 12 regional corporations, and 12 regional nonprofit and tribal consortiums that contract and compact to run federal and state programs.
