WASHINGTON – On Thursday, June 2, U.S. Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) Director Abigail Ross Hopper and Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management Janice Schneider will announce a milestone in federal-state collaborative efforts to tap the vast offshore wind energy resources in federal waters off the Atlantic Coast.
Efforts to spur responsible wind energy development are part of a series of Obama Administration initiatives to increase renewable energy offshore and onshore in coordination with state, local and federal partners. As part of President Obama's comprehensive Climate Action Plan to create American jobs, develop domestic clean energy sources and cut carbon pollution, the President directed Interior to re-double efforts on its renewable energy program by approving 20,000 megawatts of renewable energy production on public lands and waters by 2020 – enough to power six million American homes.
The White House recently convened a summit on offshore wind, which brought together federal agencies, state leaders, offshore wind developers, environmental groups and other stakeholders. Last July, Secretary Jewell and Director Hopper joined Rhode Island officials to mark the start of construction for the nation’s first offshore wind farm.
