WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Monday, Aug. 12, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell, Secretary for Housing and Urban Development Shaun Donovan, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and National Park Service Director Jonathan B. Jarvis will be at Gateway National Recreation Area to announce the establishment of a new Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay.

The Institute, stemming from a cooperative agreement between the National Park Service and the City of New York, will serve as a top-tier research center to promote the understanding of resilience in the urban ecosystem and adjacent communities.

Sec. Jewell and Sec. Donovan, Chair of the President's Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, will also make an announcement regarding efforts to assist communities in building coastal resilience.
