The U.S. Department of State played host to its first virtual career fair Wednesday, revolving around fields of applied science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) alongside STEM policy careers in the U.S. Foreign Service and civil service.

"The U.S. Department of State is committed to the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility for our employees in the conduct of diplomacy, and in serving the American people," state department officials said in a news release.

Career Fair also highlighted student and professional program opportunities, support for employees and their families, and the employee affinity groups that strengthen and support our diversity. The department says the more diverse the workforce, the better it is as a national security asset. STEM professionals have the responsibility of developing, managing and enhancing several interconnected computer systems and IT networks globally. They take care of more than 270 diplomatic facilities spread across the world.

According to the news release, the STEM professionals "are at the forefront of addressing some of the world's most challenging issues such as climate change, sustainable energy, global health, arms control and nonproliferation.” It also stated that STEM professionals “promote and safeguard the health and wellbeing of America’s diplomatic community.”

Women, people of color, LGBTQI+, individuals with disabilities, veterans and interested parties were all encouraged to attend the fair. All current college students, entry-level job seekers, recent graduates, and experienced professionals also were invited.
